This page lists some internal (and somehow outdated) stuff:

Chemistry started as a Java implementation. Later on, jsclient added a Javascript client and cmislib a Python libary. With OpenCMIS, another Java implementation joined the Chemistry project.
With that, Chemistry (as an Incubator project) was resorted and became the umbrella for the different CMIS implementations, while OpenCMIS (becoming Chemistry's Java implementation) was merged with the former Chemistry Java implementation.
