Queste funzionalità sono il risultato del lavoro in Apache sulla versione beta di OpenOffice.org 3.4:
Cambio di licenza
La licenza è stata cambiata dalla LGPLv3 alla più semplice e non restrittiva Apache License 2. La licenza di Apache renderà l’adozione, distribuzione e modifica del software più semplice per molti utenti. Naturalmente il software resta libero, e il codice sorgente con gli aggiornamenti continuerà a essere disponibile attraverso i server di Apache Software Foundation.
Aggiornamenti vari
In conformità con la nuova licenza, tutti i componenti del software sono stati aggiornati per l’utilizzo di licenze che sono in linea con le indicazioni di ASF. Nessuna funzionalità fondamentale è stata persa, sebbene abbiamo aggiornato molte librerie che funzioneranno meglio con i nuovi standard. In aggiunta, molte librerie e intestazioni interne sono state aggiornate con versioni recenti che forniscono la stessa funzionalità o superiore. Si raccomanda fortemente che tutti gli sviluppatori e distributori abbiano questa versione aggiornata, per evitare rischi risultanti da incongruenze riscontrate in versioni precedenti della suite di OpenOffice.org.
Calc: Risolutore LP più veloce
Il precedente risolutore per la programmazione lineare è stato sostituito con il più veloce CoinMP dal progetto ‘Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research’ (COIN-OR).
Aggiornamento del Tomcat di Apache
Il servlet Tomcat di Apache è stato aggiornato dalla vecchia versione 5.0.30 a quella 5.5.35 che comporta anni di performance e miglioramenti di sicurezza senza cambiare l’API.
Supporto per le proprietà delle estremità
Adesso è possibile aggiungere un’estremità alla fine della linea. Tali estremità non sono solo riconosciute nello standard ODF1 .2 ma anche in HTML5 e SVG. Anche altre suite di office automation forniscono stili differenti per le estremità da aggiungere alle linee spesse.
Esistono tre stili:
- senza estremità, chiamato ‘estremità’ nel programma e ‘piatta’ nella UI (come in MS Office)
- con estremità rotonda, chiamato “Cerchio”
- con estremità rettangolare, chiamato “Quadrato”
Il valore della proprietà ‘piatta’ corrisponde al precedente e ora è predefinito.
Le estremità sono aggiunte alle linee, in modo che la loro lunghezza totale aumenti di due volte e mezzo il valore della larghezza di linea.
Selezionare il valore dalla lista a tendina nella finestra di dialogo delle proprietà delle linee, accanto alle impostazioni per lo stile degli angoli. La nuova proprietà è disponibile solo nei contesti in cui è attivo anche lo stile dell’angolo.
Se la linea è tratteggiata, anche i singoli trattini prendono le estremità poiché ogni punto è considerato un trattino. È possibile definire non solo lo stile delle linee e delle curve ma anche del bordo degli oggetti grafici.
Il prossimo esempio indica la nuova proprietà applicata a un connettore. La parte sinistra senza estremità, al centro con lo stile ‘cerchio’ e sulla parte destra con quello ‘quadrato’.
Le estremità sono disponibili anche per oggetti in 3D, quando si trasformano le linee aggiungendo spessore. L’esempio indica linee che hanno uno stile 'tratteggiato'.

New Gstreamer multimedia framework on Linux systems
Gstreamer is available now to use to playback multimedia content in OpenOffice documents (e.g. audio and video in Impress presentations). Note that Gstreamer (and the appropriate gst-plugins) need to be installed in system.

New Features for Apache OpenOffice 3.4
These features are the result of the work at Apache on OpenOffice since the OpenOffice.org 3.4 beta:
License Change
The License has changed from LGPLv3 to the permissive Apache License 2. The Apache License will make adoption, distribution and modification of the software easier for many users. Of course the software remains free, and the source code with its updates will continue to be available through the Apache Software Foundation servers.
Misc Updates.
In accordance to the new license all the software components have been updated to use licenses that are in line with ASF guidelines. No critical functionality was lost, through we did update many libraries that will work better with new standards. As a side result, many internal libraries and headers were updated with modern versions that provide the same or superior functionality. We strongly recommend that all developers and distributors should update to this release, to avoid risks resulting from inconsistencies found in previous versions of the OpenOffice.org suite.
Calc: Faster LP solver.
The previous Linear Programming solver has been replaced with the faster and better designed CoinMP from the Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research (COIN-OR) project.
Apache Tomcat updated.
The Apache Tomcat servlet was updated from the older version 5.0.30 to version 5.5.35 which brings in years of performance and security improvements without changing the API.
Support for Line Cap Property
Now you can add a cap to the end of a line. Such caps are not only known in the ODF1 .2 standard but in HTML5 and SVG too. Also other Office Suites provide caps in different styles to be added to thick lines.
Three styles exist:
- without a cap, called 'Butt' in programming and 'Flat' in UI (as in MS Office)
- with a round cap, called 'Round'
- with a rectangle cap, called 'Square'
The property value 'Flat' corresponds to the old behavior and is now the default.
The caps are added to the lines, so that the total length of the lines increases with two-times a half line width.
Select the value from a drop-down-list in the line property dialog, just beside the settings for corner style. The new property is only available in contexts, where the corner style is active too.
If a line is dashed, the single dashes get caps too. Hereby a dot is treated as dash. You can style not only pure lines and curves, but the border of graphic objects as well.
The next example shows the new property applied to a connector. Left side without cap, in the middle with 'round' cap, and on the right side with 'square' cap.
The caps are available for 3D-objects too, when you turn on lines and make them thick. The example shows lines, which are styled to look “dotted”.

Linecaps defined in svg-graphics are supported, so that those graphics look the same as they do in modern browsers.
