8. Time in incubation is a signal, not a goal
Length of incubation varies widely, from a few months to many years. Fast graduation can indicate strong prior community maturity (as with Flink), but it can also mask insufficient independence if mentors drive the process too quickly. Long incubation isn't automatically bad either; it can reflect complex IP clearance (NetBeans) or steady culture-building (Superset). Mentors should focus less on the calendar and more on demonstrated ASF maturity: consistent releases, independent decision-making, and clear community growth.
