Note that you don't need to be a committer in order to contribute or participate in the project. Patches, JIRA's and participation on the mailing lists and forums are possible and encouraged! It's the way to get necessary Karma to become a committer.

Steps and Criteria for Becoming a Committer

  1. Participate Get involved and contribute via project's mailing lists, forumsJIRA, JIRAwiki, documentation or , sending patches and pull requests, and just generally evangelizing about the technology to the greater community.
  2. Many forms of participation on Apache infrastructure are automatically preserved, but for evangelism, support and user education via forums outside of Apache infrastructure, contributors should post a note to the project mail lists so that the greater project community will know about their contribution.
  3. Once you become a contributor you will probably be invited by another committer to be a new committer and the community will votea contributor shows a consistent history of participating in the development process or community, a Committer should nominate them to the Apache Geode PPMC for consideration to become a Committer.  
  4. The Committers on the PPMC will consider both the history and quality of the contributors' participation, and vote whether to grant commit privileges to the candidate, or provide feedback and mentoring to the candidate to help further groom them to become a Committer in the future.
  5. Contributors who provide consistent quality participation in any form in the project, and who show promise for future contributions should generally be accepted by the PPMC as a new Committer.
  6. Newly voted Committers must If the vote pass and you get accepted, download and print the Apache Contributor License Agreement (ICLA) from here. (For a company that will assign employees to work with Apache projects, please check the Corporate CLA)
  7. Sign and scan the ICLA and send to secretary@apache.org.
  8. Wait for your name to appear in the list of received CLA's. 
  9. Once that is complete, you can send a message to dev@geode.incubator.apache.org with the following information:

  10. Once your account is provisioned you shall receive an e-mail from root@apache.org with details.
  11. Login at https://id.apache.org to test your account and update your profile if needed.
