## Description:

- The Diversity and Inclusion VP works in collaboration with a team that contributes towards generating a current description of the D&I landscape in the industry and for the foundation. The team also focuses on developing resources the projects can leverage to increase diversity and inclusion in their communities.

## Issues:

  • I am bringing this topic again as I was contacted by a ASF member that wanted to participate in the Outreachy program during the May-August 2023 round. As communicated in my report of February 2023, we are not going to participate in the program because we did not have sponsorships approved on time, this is the main reason, we didn't submit our application to participate due to lack of sponsorship. The due date passed and we had no longer opportunity to participate during said round, we can always participate during the December-March round, paperwork and sponsorships must be approved during August/September. Outreachy supported our decision of not participating in this round because the "Appropriation of indigenous culture" topic may take a lot of time and resources, so it was better for both sides to keep focus to what is important and allocate resources were needed. To give you more context, I was contacted by Outreachy representatives on February to discuss the topic of what is the ASF doing to solve the concerns related to the "Appropriation of indigenous culture" [1] [2]. I communicated at that time that we were working on a solution, a committee was created to address these concerns, and Outreachy representatives agreed on the decision of not participating during the current round to focus on this topic, and proactively offered to help in anything they could. The point that we should take from this is that Outreachy is also aware and concerned about the "Appropriation of indigenous culture" topic, they take the code of conduct very seriously, they would like to see progress on the issue, and offered to help us.

## Issues:

  • I was contacted by Outreachy representatives, Sage Sharp, to discuss the topic of what is the ASF doing to solve the concerns related to the "Appropriation of indigenous culture" [3] [4]. I communicated that we are working on a solution. A committed has been created to address these concerns and we are currently in the gathering-information phase. we would like to understand the problem to identify the provide an appropriate solution. This is not going to be solved in one week, this is something that will take a significant amount of time and efforts. I also communicated that we won't participate during this round to focus in the current issue. They seemed to be satisfied with the answer.

- The Diversity and Inclusion VP works in collaboration with a team that contributes towards generating a current description of the D&I landscape in the industry and for the foundation. The team also focuses on developing resources the projects can leverage to increase diversity and inclusion in their communities.

## Issues:

  • Multiple discussion have been opened to address the this question: ASF appropriating Indigenous culture? [3] [4]
  • This is a recurrent topic that comes from time to time and we will have the opportunity to discuss during the next board meeting. Some points I would like to bring for discussion:

1. Brand management: did we committed a cultural appropriation when we decided to use the name and brand "Apache"? 
2. Marketing and publicity: are we respectful in our communication while using the name "Apache"?
3. Diversity and inclusion: which measures are we putting in place to avoid cultural appropriation (researched the culture, define and avoid stereotypes, promote the diversity and inclusion of that community, engage and share benefits, etc.)?
4. Legal: this is a brand, did we follow the corresponding procedures?
5. Public relations: our image and reputation?

  • Outreachy December 2022 - March 2023 in progress. You can find the details of our Outreachy inter here [1].  
  • Project: "SOLR-11872 Refactor test infra to work with a managed SolrClient; ditch TestHarness" [2]
  • May-August 2023 round is open. Outreachy is calling for open source communities and mentors. Feb. 6, 2023 at 4pm UTC is the deadline for submitting an initial application. Applicants will be notified of their initial application status on March 6, 2023.

*** Project: User Experience Research on new contributors ***

  • Bitergia submitted draft of the user experience research report based on the data collected with the D&I survey. It is currently under internal review before sharing it with the community to confirm the approach is correct and avoid misunderstandings.
  • Bitergia and Kenn (Apache Beam) continue working on the dashboard.

  • Outreachy May-August 2022 internship round finalised on August 26, 2022. We had 2 Outreachy interns during this round.[1]
  • A big thank you to María Arias de Reyna Domínguez and Antonin Stefanutti for mentoring the Outreachy interns. [2][3]
  • Two projects: Improve Camel K API and Examples and Improve Camel K operator scalability.
  • Outreachy December 2022 - March 2023. We applied as a community and got accepted!

## Description:

  • The community has provided feedback on the content of the survey [2]. We have closed the feedback period and included/addressed all the recommendations done. 
  • The VP. of privacy, Christian Grobmeier, has assessed the survey tool from data privacy perspective and gave the GTG (good to go) to the tool. We are currently reviewing the GDPR checks completion and will start porting the survey content to the tool during the next days. 
  • Bitergia is going to provided a new mockup of the dashboard that will be used as improvement method, we will review it in the next round.
