April 5, 2023 Recap
Meeting recording: Apache Cassandra Publicity & Marketing Working Group - Zoom
Lots of discussion on where is our “home?” Which channels do we put energy in.. and for what?
- Goal: meet people where they are and connect with them the way they consume things.
- Where are people congregating, how are they communicating - is a blog the right thing to invest in or is there another place that should be the first way we funnel them?
- Dev talking to Dev is likely Cassandra Slack, Dev talking to user, could be PC?
- We don’t want channel overload and we want to have purpose for each channel.
- Discord for Cassandra users - it’s Planet Cassandra. Link between PC Discord and website - working on a bot that will let you ask for content published on PC. Can we do this on Slack for equal functionality across domains? Community fragmentation could be a concern
- We are thinking about fragmentation but we see critical mass on Discord. But we want to make sure everything doesn’t go to one channel
Planet Cassandra:
- Planet Cassandra is about 20 percent built and it will be so much more. We want community involvement to help us build it together
- ACTIONS:
- Constantia action for next meet: outline of different channels and use cases for each so everyone has a sense for what we’re thinking and we can get input
- Working on an onboarding component for Discord to provide a guided experience (Constantia) - let’s discuss in APAC marketing meeting; Hugh will guide us thru it.
- Talking about adding a monthly virtual town hall for devs and users but primarily users - bring people around the table (coming soon!)
- Messaging guidelines - do we need something that guides how orgs talk about Cassandra as we try to drive adoption and present in a positive light? Is that something that would be a remit of this group?
- ACTION: John to put together something for next meeting - a few simple thoughts
- Potential confusion on Website - Cassandra.org - AWS Keyspaces for Cassandra? From a user perspective that could be confusing. There’s been appetite for try https://share.getliner.com/u4siXt8Fuythings that are SQL compliant. We haven’t figured out the clearly demarcated rules on what is SQL compatible.
- Should say SQL as a service cloud offerings - should look at verbiage
- We need a definition of what should be here - Josh/PMC can put together definition and Constantia can help with website updates
- Meetups
- Germany loves meetups, John has organizers in London
- Should we look at this totally fresh? Should there be new meetup groups in key markets? New branding? Low engagement on London meetup group. Slight uptick w/Summit planned.
- Constantia can provide Meetup-in-a-box kit (see above). Content matters most though. What is the right content and frequency that will attract people (regular cadence)?
- Co-organizers - ok if vendors and end-users as co-organizers is great. Then it’s not all one person’s responsibility and it brings in fresh content/perspectives
- ACTION: Melissa to connect John + Hugh to discuss meetups in more detail, examine whether we start fresh or try to revitalize existing
- Adjacent meetup topics that Cassandra is complimentary with - our big bet is on dataset sizes will grow faster than other tech can handle. ML/AI work with massive amounts of data. What are we good at? Who can benefit from this? (External communities / meetups we can partner with? Can we be guest speakers?)
- This group - come up with lists of topics/abstracts and speakers and match with where we can host these speakers - Speaker Bureau. Constantia to share ideas on a framework with marketing ML.
- Networking is not to be undersold with meetups.
