General Information.

Applications will be judged on merit, based upon details provided on their application form. The application form attempts to capture the necessary information the Committee requires to be able to make such a judgment. Bear in mind that, due to the Committee's limited resources, criteria will be aggressively applied. Just because someone does not receive assistance on this occasion does not mean that they are not worthy of assistance or that the Committee does not value their contribution to the ASF or open source in general. We would love to be able to offer support more widely, but as always, the Committee is limited by the funds available.

Those deemed by the Committee to be most in need of assistance will be notified within a week of the closing of the application period.

The above information is also available on this page.

Additional Information and Tips.

Currently there are 19 questions that need answering as fully as possible, including personal and financial information. This information is restricted to only those people in the Committee that score the applications. This information is then destroyed after the judging period is over.

If applicable, you will need a valid passport and/or visa for the Country that the event is being held. Travel Insurance should also be obtained and is your responsibility to obtain and prove that you have obtained.

You will be asked questions on your Open Source involvement so please be prepared to provide evidence of this, such as providing links to mailing list involvement, patches you have contributed, patches you have applied, commits made etc etc. This can be an ASF project, or any other Open Source project that has an established community. The more details you provide here, with links, will greatly help your chances. The judges will look for evidence of sustained involvement and so it is a good thing if you don't have to make the judges spend time finding this information themselves.

You should allow between 1 hour and 2 hours to complete the application form (including researching and providing links etc). A rushed or poorly filled out application will not be in your best interests.

Previous successful Applicants.

Note that if you have attended an event sponsored by the TAC previously, the following additional rules apply to you:

  1. If you attended the last ApacheCon event and were sponsored by TAC you are not allowed to get assistance this time around.
  2. You are not allowed to be sponsored by TAC more than twice in any three year period.
  3. If places are limited (and they usually are), similarly scored applicants that have not be previously successful, will likely be preferred ahead of your application.

Summary.

You may think from reading the above that it is not worth your while to bother applying, but you'd be wrong! On average there are between 6 and 12 successful applicants per event and we spend between twenty and thirty thousand USD per event getting those people to our events.

Provide all the information required by the application and more, as with most things in life, you get out what you put in.
